Ohio National Announces Recipients of Community Service Award

Cincinnati -- It is with great pleasure that Ohio National Financial Services announces the winners of the Paul E. Martin Community Service Award.

Patricia Barry, a manager in Ohio National’s universal life/variable universal life services department, and Gates Smith, CLU, ChFC, Ohio National’s executive vice president, group and agency distribution, have been selected as the 2004 award recipients.

Among other activities, Barry is honored with the Paul E. Martin Community Service Award for her involvement with the Special Riders Program at Cincinnati’s Winton Woods. The program, which enables young people with physical and mental challenges to participate in horseback riding, requires the aid of skilled volunteers and personal, one-on-one assistance.

Barry has faithfully participated in the program for eight years, steadily increasing her impact on the community as she helps countless children and their families. She is extremely loyal to the program, volunteering approximately five hours per week, as well as additional hours to maintain the barns, horses and additional facilities. Barry also volunteers for weekend duty when the program offers outreach opportunities for the Greater Cincinnati community.

In addition to her Special Riders involvement, Barry has served as an integral part of Ohio National’s Tiger Team, a recognition program designed to honor the company’s top group of consistently high-level performing associates. As part of the Tiger Team, Barry’s work helped to launch the Tender Mercies monthly lunch program.

Since 1985, Tender Mercies has been providing housing and individualized supportive services to homeless people with chronic mental illness. Throughout Tender Mercies’ seven housing buildings in Over-the-Rhine, 150 permanent residents and 16 transitional residents are served. Tiger Team members serve as liaisons between Tender Mercies and Ohio National and make monthly trips to serve lunch to Tender Mercies residents.

Smith is honored with the Paul E. Martin Community Service Award for his community and financial services industry volunteer efforts. He currently serves as chairman of the board of a Section 8 (HUD) subsidized housing project, which serves chronically disabled and low-income senior residents. He has served on this board for seven years and as its chairman for the last four years.

As was stated on his nomination form, “Although he could be nominated for a number of efforts individually, what also recommends his nomination is an accumulation of years of creative, perceptive and caring service.”

Smith serves on the Hamilton County Board of Thrivent Financial Investments which reviews and allocates matching funds for a variety of community projects including Habitat for Humanity, the Madisonville Education Assistance Center and community outreach programs through Prince of Peace Church.

Smith is a board member of “Miracles for Life,” a group that creates awareness of the importance of organ donation, and he is a member of the board of directors of a local hospital’s nonprofit foundation. He is a member of Rotary Club and a past member of the Lighthouse Youth Services board of directors, serving as a board member for five years during the 1990s.

In 1980, with the support and assistance of his wife Kathy, Smith was active in leadership of local efforts promoting and developing Worldwide Marriage Encounter. The program, which strives for the betterment of couples’ marriage relationships, has involved nearly 7,000 married people since its inception. Smith was instrumental locally in getting this program underway by organizing, planning, recruiting and presenting the program to participants. He and his wife continue in their involvement with Marriage Encounter.

In addition, Smith has been active in various financial services industry groups. He currently is active in the Life Insurance Marketing Research Association’s (LIMRA) Distribution Leaders’ Roundtable, and has served as the group’s chairperson. In addition, he has been a member of the Cincinnati Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors for more than 30 years.

Established in 1979, the Paul E. Martin Community Service Award honors the significant civic betterment endeavors of the late Paul E. Martin, Ohio National’s former president and CEO. This award is presented annually to dedicated sales and home office associates who have worked to improve their community’s quality of life.

Tracing its corporate origins to 1909, Ohio National today markets a variety of insurance and financial products through more than 30,000 representatives in 47 states (all except Alaska, Hawaii and New York), the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and through subsidiary operations in Santiago, Chile. As of December 31, 2003, its affiliated companies have more than $18 billion of total assets under management. Voted Cincinnati's "Best Place to Work" (large category) by the Business Courier, Ohio National has more than 750 corporate headquarters associates.
